I am honoured to present today His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary Imam, or spiritual leader, of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. His Highness is also of course an honorary citizen of this country, a person whose many contributions and connections to Canadian life and society we extend with today’s ceremony.

Posted May 25th, 2016 by librarian-hdMuslims and Christians came together May 20 to acknowledge their common history and ancient bonds as Toronto’s Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies awarded His Highness the Aga Khan with its highest degree.
In his role as chancellor of the prestigious graduate school, Cardinal Thomas Collins bestowed an honourary doctor of letters in Mediaeval Studies on the spiritual leader of the world’s 15 million Ismaili Muslims.
Collins praised the Aga Khan as a religious voice of reason, peace and humanity.

The pair met in the Prime Minister’s office at Centre Block to discuss “pluralism, diversity and all the things that Canada can contribute to offering more peace and stability in the world,” according to the Prime Minister.

Happy Birthday Prince Hussain

Since then, Prince Hussain has been based in France and working with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Following completion of a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University in 2004, Prince Hussain married Princess Khaliya (nee Kristin White) at the picturesque Chateau of Chantilly in September 2006 in a religious ceremony. They divorced in 2013
