THE RULER WITHOUT A KINGDOM : The Aga Khan talks candidly to The Sunday Times. He is only twenty-eight. Yet he holds sway over twenty million people of one faith but widely differing nationalities in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. This two-part conversation with Nicholas Tomalin is a frank discussion of his own personality and power.

Q- Am I right that the Ismaili Faith is an esoteric one, that's to say, only real scholars and experts have read all the crucial texts that enable them to understand the inner nature of your religion?

A- "Yes, this is so."

Q- Do you consider yourself expert in these?

A- "Certainly. I think my grandfather ensured that we had a thorough knowledge of the important books."

Q- Do you think if you hadn't become Aga Khan you might have made a successful engineer? Or businessman?

A- "Who can tell?"

Q- Do you feel happier here in the West, or in the East?

(In September / October 1960 His Royal Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan toured whole of Pakistan for about 40 days. At the conclusion of this tour, he gave an interview to the Radio Pakistan’s representative and explained how it is possible to live a modern life and at the same time a religious life.

His message to the world’s largest Muslim State, Pakistan was “Islam and Work”)

In September/October 1960, His Royal Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan toured all over Pakistan. Many foreign and local correspondents and photographers accompanied him on this colourful tour made in a Special Train called the ‘Aga Khan Express’ in West Pakistan. In the northern-most picturesque part known as Hunza Valley, His Royal Highness went in jeep and on horse-back. In East Pakistan the tour was done mostly by air and river transport.
